Rastafari movement, whose culture was a key element in the development of Reggae can no longer claim ownership of Reggae, the music that the King of Reggae Bob Marley said; was a music created by the Rastaman.
Pressure Sounds is really coming into it’s own in the re-issue market, the imagination and attention to detail of their reissues in the last year or so has really put the competition (or whats left of it) to shame.
Things look to get even better in 2009 with a release that chronicles the mid 70’s spat between I Roy and Prince Jazzbo called Once Upon A Time At King Tubby’s . None of the tunes are mad rare but this is a superb concept and even if you’ve got the tunes already you’ll want to pick up a copy of this.
After nine months of controversial litigation, the sensational stage performer Tewodros Kassahun, more popularly known as Teddy-Afro, was last Friday, December 5, 2008, sentenced to six years imprisonment and an 18,000 Br fine.
A question posed to me by Krazy recently asked me if i was aware that not all reggae involved rasta.
Ofcourse we all know reggae was born out of musical innovation and traditional/contempory influences at the time of its genisis in jamaica in the late 60’s. Roots reggae held sway until the early 80’s when dancehall ushered in a youthful rebellion. the youth wanting to distinguish themselves from the rasta infused music of their elders that had come before them used slackness as their distinction. but without the influence of the rastafarian inspired classic roots reggae period there would have been nothing to drive the music to evole from what it had been to what became. Same goes for the digital revolution in reggae in the mid 80’s which spawned ragga and the like. It seems to me Reggae in all its forms is at its heart a spiritual music. even as it moves farther away from its rasta roots. what do you the reader think?

Dennis Brown:
The Best of Dennis Brown: The Niney Years, Released 11/04/2008
When Niney released Dennis Brown’s “Westbound Train” he was already one of the top producers in Jamaica. He had scored with his own “Blood and Fire” which was song of the year in 1972, and was producing and arranging for both Bunny Lee and Joe Gibbs. But it was his work with Dennis Brown that would catapult both he and Dennis truly into the limelight.
The leader of the world-famous band, Byron Lee and the Dragonnaires was hospitalised at the Tony Thwaites Wing of the University Hospital of the West Indies, after being flown home two weeks ago.

In OZ you will find all colours of dreads in reggae, you have purple dreads, and green dreads, and some colours I am not sure of. Dreads don’t only belong to Rasta’s anymore or even the the name Rastafari as their’s a hard rock band called, ‘Rastafarian Stage Divers’ to lesbian reggae bands and a band with a transvestite who is half dread and half women, I mean the hair styes as he turned his head side to side on stage.

Greensleeves release a new instalment of their Most Wanted series on CD in September. This time the focus is the dancehall output of Johnny Osbourne, from early 80’s classics like Fally Ranking to tough digital offerings from later in the decade. As in previous issues there are plenty of 12″ mixes to add to the overall quality.
“But the level of shock around what happened hasn’t diminished. His passing stopped the whole nation. He has an enormous presence culturally and I think although South African audiences had overlooked him in a way in recent times, his stature is undeniable. Not a day goes by without me hearing his music. It was a great privilege to work with someone like him.”
Even the great King Tubby himself would come to be out dubbed by the talented youth Scientist. In the period spanning 1979-83 Scientist and the Roots Radics would be involved in almost all the top music of the day.
